I had a paid subscription that is out of credits, and recently got a student account so I cancelled the paid one. It wont let me switch to the student account anymore. Would be nice to be able to use those credits right away.

TL;DR: That’s not possible, at least for the current month.

Previously, I was asked a similar question by GitHub support; here is the answer: you cannot use student Copilot requests after your normal paid plans are exhausted, but you can do so by subscribing after student requests are exhausted.

It is not possible to have a personal Copilot subscription and a Copilot Business/Enterprise subscription at the same time. Your Copilot Business seat takes precedence over your personal subscription, which is intended, and it is not possible to switch between them.

If you have an active Copilot Pro or Copilot Pro+ plan, and are then assigned a seat as part of a Copilot Business or Copilot Enterprise plan, your personal Copilot plan will be automatically canceled. You will receive a prorated refund for any remaining portion of your personal plan's current billing cycle. You will then be able to continue using Copilot according to the policies set by your company.

All of your Copilot usage will be billed to your Organization unless you schedule a cancellation for the Copilot Business seat.

Use the student request first, then subscribe after the student request is exhausted. Cancel the paid subscription at the end of the month (you can schedule automatic cancellation after subscribing; it will be removed at the end of the billing cycle), and then repeat this process.

yeah this is kinda common when switching plans

when you cancel a paid GitHub Copilot Pro and move to the student pack, it doesn’t always switch instantly. sometimes there’s a delay or the system still has your old subscription state cached

a few things you can try:

log out and log back into github

disable and re-enable copilot in settings

check if your student benefits are actually activated in the student developer pack page

sometimes it just takes a few hours (in some cases up to a day) to fully switch

if it’s still stuck after that, you’ll probably need to contact github support since it’s an account-side issue

kinda annoying yeah but it should fix once the plan fully transitions 👍

That’s misleading; it doesn’t work that way.
